Davey's Career High Sparks Women's Hoops to Win in NCAA Opener

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's basketball team pulled away in the second quarter and cruised to a 69-48 win over Western New England in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament Friday evening in Morrell Gymnasium.
 
The Polar Bears (26-2) advance to the second round of the tournament where they will face UMass Dartmouth at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday for a trip to the Sweet Sixteen. The Golden Bears finish their season with a record of 22-6. Tickets are available now at this link.
 
Game Highlights
  • The teams traded buckets in the early going before a capacity crowd in Morrell Gymnasium and the visitors held a 10-7 lead at the midway point of the opening quarter.
  • Sparked by a layup from Abbie Quinn and a steal and layup by Sydney Jones, Bowdoin rolled off a 10-1 run to close the period, getting a three-pointer from Jones in the final minute to carry a 17-11 lead into the second.
  • Bowdoin never trailed again, pushing the lead to 11 points with a 7-2 surge to open the second quarter as Carly Davey came alive with a seven-point quarter that lifted the Polar Bears' advantage to 34-18 at the break.
  • Davey continued to pour it on in the third with 11 points as Bowdoin put the contest out of reach.
  • Bowdoin led by as many as 25 in the fourth quarter on their way to the win.
By The Numbers
  • Carly Davey finished with a career-high 21 points, including 5-8 shooting from three-point range.
  • Sydney Jones finished with 15 points, six rebounds, seven assists and six steals in an outstanding effort.
  • Megan Tan added eight points and four assists while Maria Belardi and Abbie Quinn had five apiece off the bench.
  • Bowdoin finished at 42% shooting for the game and went 11-26 from three-point range.
  • Western New England, who was paced by 15 points and eight boards from Shaina Cooney, shot 42% but only 1-12 from long distance.
  • The Golden Bears won the rebounding battle 34-31, but Bowdoin grabbed ten offensive boards and finished with 18 second chance points.
  • The Polar Bears also finished with 14 steals and cashed in 22 points off turnovers in the game.
