Late Bucket Sinks Men's Basketball at Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Bowdoin College men's basketball team came within a late basket of knocking off the 22nd-ranked team in the nation on Saturday, falling to Carnegie Mellon by a score of 69-66. The Polar Bears fall to 6-2 this season while the Tartans improve to 6-1.
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin led throughout most of the first half, including by as many as eight points late in the period, spurred by ten points off the bench from Liam McBride and Ben Chilson.
  • The Polar Bears carried a 36-31 lead into the break and maintained that lead until five minutes into the second half when a 10-2 Carnegie Mellon run gave the Tartans their first lead since the opening moments of the game.
  • The teams went back and forth from there, trading the lead 15 times in the final 15 minutes of the contest.
  • Down 66-64 with under a minute to go, a strong take to the hoop by Will Logue knotted the game at 66 apiece.
  • On the Tartans' next possession, Justin Allen - who finished with 36 points, including 22 in the second half - drove the basket and made a running lay-in while being fouled to give the hosts a 69-66 edge with just nine seconds remaining.
  • Bowdoin had a good last look to tie, but Liam McBride's three-pointer at the buzzer rimmed out as time expired.
By The Numbers
  • James McGowan finished with 14 points while Afamdi Achufusi scored ten. Ben Chilson pitched in 12 points off the bench for the Polar Bears.
  • Kevin Reeves led the team with ten rebounds and had two blocks while Nolan Bessire had a pair of blocks as well.
  • Bowdoin shot 35% from the field, including 7-28 (25%) from long range, but held Carnegie Mellon to 40%, including 2-17 from three-point range.
