Women's Hoops Holds Off Bates to Stay Unbeaten

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's basketball team rode a strong third quarter to a 76-71 win over Bates on Thursday evening in Morrell Gymnasium. The seventh-ranked Polar Bears improve to 5-0 this season while the Bobcats fall to 6-2.
 
Game Highlights
  • After tightly-played first half saw the Bobcats enter halftime with a 33-32 lead thanks to 46% shooting (6-13) from long distance.
  • Bates led by as many as seven points in the second quarter, but Bowdoin closed the half on a 7-1 run, including a halfcourt buzzer-beating three-pointer by Sydney Jones.
  • After a bucket by Bates to start the second half, Bowdoin answered with a 7-0 run to take the lead on a layup by Abbie Quinn and a three-pointer from Jamie Yue.
  • Bowdoin never relinquished the lead after that, leading for the final 18:29 of the contest, but Bates didn't go away.
  • The Polar Bears led by as many as ten points in the fourth quarter but Bates was able to trim the lead to a single possession with under five minutes to go, including to a single point, 72-71, with 22 seconds remaining.
  • Bowdoin stemmed the tide, however, answering every challenge and going 4-4 from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the win.
By The Numbers
  • Abbie Quinn was dominant inside for Bowdoin, scoring a career-high 25 points with eight rebounds and two steals, going 8-11 from the field and 9-10 from the stripe.
  • Sydney Jones posted a double-double, scoring 22 points with 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Polar Bears.
  • Maria Belardi also saw double figures, scoring ten points with six rebounds.
  • Bowdoin finished at 42% shooting for the game while Bates hit 45%.
  • The Polar Bears crushed the rebounding battle, holding a 47-27 edge on the glass and went 18-23 from the free throw line as a team, compared to 11-19 for the Bobcats.
  • Bowdoin and Bates will play their NESCAC conference game in Lewiston on January 17.
