Women's Hoops Rallies in Fourth Quarter To Win Florida Opener

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Sydney Jones scored the game-winning bucket with 13 seconds remaining to give the Bowdoin College women's basketball team a 66-64 win over Denison on Sunday afternoon.
 
The sixth-ranked Polar Bears remain unbeaten at 9-0 this season while Denison falls to 7-4 on the year.
 
Game Highlights
  • A 26-point second quarter gave the Big Red a 38-30 lead at halftime and Denison carried a 53-49 lead into the fourth quarter.
  • A three-pointer by Sydney Jones sparked a 9-2 Bowdoin run to open the final period, with Grace Kinum giving the Polar Bears their first lead since the opening half on a layup with 6:08 to go.
  • Bowdoin would never surrender the lead after that, despite Denison rallying to tie the score on a pair of occasions in the final 1:37.
  • After a three-pointer deadlocked the score at 62, Sydney Jones netted a jump shot with 1:07 to go to give Bowdoin a 64-62 edge.
  • A pair of Denison free throws knotted the score at 64 on the very next possession, but Bowdoin's Melissa Leone grabbed a big offensive rebound on the Polar Bears' next offensive possession, leading to the go-ahead layup from Jones, off an assist from Abbie Quinn.
  • Bowdoin held off Denison in the closing moments to secure the win.

  • Sydney Jones scored 20 points with four assists, four rebounds and a steal while Grace Kinum scored 14 points with seven boards, two blocks and two steals.
  • Melissa Leone had eight points off the bench for Bowdoin, who scored 18 second chance points and 12 points off turnovers in the victory.
  • Bowdoin shot 44% in the win, including 50% in the second half, including four three-pointers, to rally for the win.
  • Denison ended at 41% shooting for the contest.
