Overtime Goal Keeps Polar Bears Perfect With Sweep at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine – Emma Merrill scored midway through overtime to lift the Bowdoin women's ice hockey team to a 3-2 overtime win and series sweep at Colby on Saturday evening.

The Polar Bears are 4-0-0 (4-0-0 NESCAC) for the first time since the 2006-07 season. The last time Bowdoin swept Colby was in November 2014. The Mules drop to 1-2-0 (0-2-0 NESCAC).

Game Highlights
  • Colby broke through with 5:50 remaining in the first period to take a 1-0 lead. Beth Sinson controlled the puck on the left side and found Sophia Kennedy in the slot for a wrister to beat Sarah Peterson.
  • Bella Mele found an equalizer midway through the second period to tie the game. Bella Burghart set up the play from the left side with a centering feed that allowed Mele to drift toward the middle for a blistering one-timer.
  • Just two minutes later, Bowdoin took its first lead. Gia Massari took the puck down the ice and found Luna Lu streaking down on her left. Massari's pass met Lu in stride for a perfectly timed wrister.
  • The Mules converted on a power play opportunity in the third to even the game. Maria Pierce cycled the puck back to Anna Staton near the left point for a shot through traffic and into the net.
  • Merrill came up with the overtime heroics at 2:23. Merrill dug the puck out of the right corner in Colby territory and came away for an uncontested look at Paige Bolyard. Merrill put a shot to the top left corner for the game-winner.
