Macaulay's Record-Setting Performance Leads Polar Bears Past Bobcats

LEWISTON, Maine – Bowdoin first-year quarterback Peter Macaulay tied a school record with five touchdown passes as the Polar Bears earned their first win in Lewiston since 2007, defeating Bates 35-24 on Saturday night. The win sets the stage for a CBB championship game next Saturday night in Brunswick between the Polar Bears (3-5) and Colby College. Bates falls to 2-6 on the year with its second straight double-digit loss to Bowdoin.

Game Highlights
  • Macaulay got the Polar Bears going early, delivering a pair of first-quarter touchdown passes to Ty Connolly (17 yards) and Jed Hoggard (35 yards) to stake Bowdoin a 14-0 lead.
  • Bates responded with ten quick points before the end of the first quarter to trim the lead to 14-10.
  • Bowdoin answered with an 18-yard strike from Macaulay to Austin Hiscoe late in the second quarter to take a 21-10 edge into the break.
  • Then, on Bowdoin's first drive of the third quarter, Macaulay found Brennan Pagan for a 50-yard touchdown, building Bowdoin's lead to 28-10.
  • Bates wouldn't go away thanks to a rushing attack that amassed 392 yards on the day, but couldn't overcome the steep deficit.
  • The Bobcats got as close as 28-17 entering the fourth quarter, but Macaulay delivered his fifth TD of the day on the first play of the period, 17 yards to Jake Gaylord.
  • After Bates cut into the lead late, a last-minute drive was snuffed out thanks to an interception by Griffin Monroe, sealing the win.
By The Numbers
  • Macaulay finished the day 16-23 for 272 yards and five touchdowns against no interceptions. He also rushed for 36 yards as Bowdoin totaled 162 yards on the ground as well.
  • His five touchdowns tie the school mark held by Ricky LeClerc (2005 vs. Wesleyan) and Andrew Boel (2021 vs. Wesleyan).
  • Despite their rushing total, the Bobcats could only cover 65 yards passing in the game as Bates completed five passes with two interceptions.
  • Jed Hoggard caught three passes for 85 yards while Jake Gaylord caught four passes for 62 yards to lead the Polar Bear receivers. Luke Watson rushed for 55 yards and had 32 yards receiving for Bowdoin.
  • Koy Price led the Bowdoin defense with seven tackles, including a sack, while Max Danenhower added a pair of sacks. Sam Schwartz and Griffin Monroe each had interceptions.
  • The win improves Bowdoin to  69-50-7 all-time against Bates.
Up Next
