Women's Basketball Sprints Past Skidmore in Season Opener

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's basketball team held Skidmore to 17 points in the second half en route to a dominating 74-44 season-opening win on Saturday in Morrell Gymnasium. The fifth-ranked Polar Bears are 1-0 on the season with the win while the Thoroughbreds fall to 1-1 on the year.
 
Game Highlights
  • A high-scoring first quarter saw Skidmore jump to an early 10-5 lead, but Bowdoin steadied itself and, sparked by a pair of Maria Belardi three-pointers, finished the quarter on an 18-6 run to carry a 23-16 lead into the second quarter.
  • The Polar Bears extended their lead to 40-27 at intermission as Sydney Jones paced Bowdoin with eight second quarter points.
  • Bowdoin continued to roll in the second half, locking Skidmore down, holding the Thoroughbreds to just 8-25 (32%) shooting in the final twenty minutes.
  • The Polar Bears' 30 point lead at the buzzer was their largest lead of the contest.

  • Eleven different players scored in the win for Bowdoin, led by 22 points, five rebounds, and five steals from Sydney Jones.
  • Abbie Quinn had eight points and five boards while Maria Belardi, Callie Godfrey, Melissa Leone, Rachel Storey, and Grace Kinum had six apiece. Leone had a team-best six rebounds.
  • Bowdoin finished at 42% shooting for the contest and went 16-21 from the free throw line while Skidmore shot 37% and went 1-8 from the line.
  • The Polar Bears scored 28 points off turnovers and put home 20 second-chance points in the victory.
