Wheeler Scores In Overtime To Push Polar Bears Past Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Luke Wheeler scored both goals to lead the Bowdoin men's ice hockey team to a 2-1 overtime win at Williams on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Polar Bears return to Maine with a 1-1-0 (1-1-0 NESCAC) record. The Ephs are winless on the early season with a pair of conference losses.
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin scored its first goal of the season with 5:08 remaining in the second period. Gabe Shipper collected the puck behind the net and passed up to Luke Wheeler on the far left post. Wheeler one-timed the feed to put Bowdoin on the board.
  • Williams pulled their goalie in the final minutes to put an extra skater on the ice. The play paid off as the Ephs tied the game and forced overtime with 1:45 remaining in the game. Owen Stadheim connected a pass to the stick of Jake McManus on the left post for a little backhander past AJ DiChiara.
  • Wheeler came up with the game-winning shorthanded goal with 1:42 remaining in overtime. Wheeler skated down the right side of the ice and backhanded a shot toward net as he slid to the ice. The off-speed puck snuck through Cal Sandquist's five-hole to end the game.
 
By the Numbers
  • Sandquist made 19 stops for the Ephs.
  • DiChiara stopped 31 shots for Bowdoin.
  • Williams held a slight 42-36 edge on the faceoff dot.
  • Both teams were scoreless on the power play.
