Polar Bears Overwhelm Mammoths, Earn First Win at Amherst Since 2005

AMHERST, Mass. – The Bowdoin College defense dominated from start to finish in an impressive 35-7 football victory at Amherst on Saturday afternoon. The win is the first at Amherst for Bowdoin since the 2005 season and their largest margin of win against the Mammoths since 1992. The Polar Bears improve to 2-3 this season while Amherst falls to 2-3.

Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin took the opening kickoff and set the tone, covering 75 yards on 17 plays, taking nearly nine minutes of game time and scoring on a two-yard plunge by Robbie Long at 6:01 of the opening quarter.
  • After the teams traded possessions, Bowdoin's defense forced a turnover on downs near midfield early in the second quarter, and the Polar Bears went 60 yards in seven plays, scoring on a six-yard pass from Michael Wolfendale to Brennan Pagan to make it 14-0.
  • Another three-and-out by the Bowdoin defense against the Mammoths resulted in more points for the Polar Bears before halftime, cashing in on an eight-yard run by Luke Watson to make it 21-0.
  • Bowdoin's defense held the Mammoths to a total of six yards on their final three possessions of the second period.
  • The teams traded chances in the third quarter, but neither paid off in points until late in the frame, when Bowdoin cornerback Ferris Collins stepped in front of a pass on fourth down and returned it 55 yards to paydirt to give the Polar Bears a commanding 28-0 edge.
  • Bowdoin put the game on ice early in the fourth quarter, covering 45 yards on nine plays to score on a Long pass to Austin Hiscoe from four yards out.
  • Amherst scored a late touchdown – on a 52-yard pass- to avoid the shutout.
