Late Rally Comes Up Short as Football Falls to Wesleyan

BRUNSWICK, Maine – A late rally came up just short as the Bowdoin College football team dropped a 17-14 decision to Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon at Whittier Field. The Polar Bears fall to 2-4 on the year while the Cardinals improve to 5-1.

Game Highlights
  • A first half defensive struggle saw the Cardinals grab an early 3-0 lead on a 37-yard field goal from Gage Hammond late in the opening quarter.
  • Bowdoin grabbed a halftime lead following a seven-play, 45-yard drive for a touchdown. A 17-yard scamper by Luke Watson put Bowdoin at the Wesleyan 1, and Robbie Long plunged one yard to paydirt to give the Polar Bears a 7-3 edge at the break.
  • The score stayed the same until late in the third, when James McHugh broke through the Bowdoin line and ran 56 yards for a touchdown to give Wesleyan a 10-7 edge heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The Cardinals increased their lead at 9:27 of the fourth when a long pass from Niko Candido to Blake Newcomb set up a five-yard TD run by McHugh three plays later that made it 17-7.
  • Undaunted, Bowdoin answered in just 1:26, as Long found Watson over the middle for a 60-yard scoring strike that cut the Cardinal lead to 17-14 with 8:01 remaining.
  • After forcing a three-and-out, Bowdoin got the ball back at their own 23 with 5:53 to go. The Polar Bears marched to the Wesleyan 39, but a fourth-down pass was knocked away with 2:00 to go, and the Cardinals were able to convert a first down at midfield to run out the clock.
By The Numbers
  • Bowdoin's defense posted eight sacks on the day, the most by the Polar Bears in the last 20 seasons. Koy Price led the way with 2.5 on the day, while Angus Leary had 1.5.
  • Kanoa Young and Gordon Gozdeck had six tackles apiece, including 2.5 each for loss.
  • Robbie Long passed for 117 yards and touchdown and rushed for 24 yards and a score. Luke Watson ended with 41 yards on the ground and 80 yards receiving.
  • Bowdoin held a slight edge in total yards (251-250) while Wesleyan owned a 31:13-28:47 edge in time of possession.
