Field Hockey Stumbles in Setback at Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Middlebury field hockey team scored three first half goals to outpace Bowdoin in a 4-0 result on Saturday afternoon.

The top-ranked Panthers are a perfect 6-0 (3-0 NESCAC) on the year. The Polar Bears suffer their second setback of the season with a 4-2 (1-2 NESCAC) record.

Game Highlights
  • Middlebury broke through just over two minutes into the game. Amy Griffin took a took that was blocked by a defender, but Lilly Branka batted the ball out of the air and redirected it into the net.
  • Bowdoin's best opportunity came midway through the first quarter. Caroline Higgins inserted a penalty corner with Faith Jennings reversing a pass back to Higgins. Higgins bid went just wide of the net.
  • The Panthers made it 2-0 with just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter. Julie Arsenault denied an initial shot by Griffin, but Caroline Segal got her stick on the loose ball clear and slipped it into the bottom left corner of the cage.
  • Middlebury's Katherine Lanzty made it 3-0 early in the second frame with a lift from the top of the circle.
  • The Polar Bears came out of the halftime break and quickly earned a corner. Higgins inserted, Jennings stopped and slid the ball over to Georgie Coetzer, but Coetzer's blast from the top of the circle sailed just right.
  • Middlebury pushed its lead to four with a Griffin goal off a reverse sweep.
  • Mackay Bommer's shot in the final minutes forced the Middlebury keeper to make a diving save to preserve the shutout.
