Polar Bears Roll to Road Win in Season-Opener at Hamilton

CLINTON, N.Y.  – The Bowdoin College football team scored 26 unanswered points and cruised to a season-opening 26-12 win at Hamilton College on Saturday afternoon. The win is the first on the road for the Polar Bears (1-0) since 2014 and marks the first time since 1990-91 that Bowdoin has won its season opener in consecutive seasons. The Polar Bears beat the Continentals (0-1) in last year's opener in Brunswick, 41-13.

Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin took the opening kickoff and marched 64 yards in 13 plays, but a Hamilton interception inside their own ten yard line stymied the first drive.
  • The Polar Bears defense forced a three-and-out, however, and Bowdoin took over at the Hamilton 33. Two plays later, Andrew Boel tossed a strike down the left hashmarks to Brendan King for a 31-yard score and 7-0 lead.
  • Following another strong series by the Bowdoin defense, the Polar Bears took over at their own 20 and, three players later, Boel found first-year Luke Watson on a screen pass. Watson exploded through traffic down the left sideline for a 68-yard touchdown that extended Bowdoin's lead to 13-0.
  • The Polar Bears tacked on two field goals before intermission – from 26 and 20 yards out by Jotham Casey – to carry a 19-0 lead into the break.
  • Bowdoin held a dominating 317-65 in total yards in the opening half.
  • After a scoreless third quarter that saw the Bowdoin defense keep a pair of long Hamilton drives out of the end zone, Bowdoin put the contest out of reach when Boel found James Doody from 48 yards out to extend the lead to 26-0 with 14:18 to go.
  • The Continentals added a pair of late touchdowns to trim the final margin to 26-12.
By The Numbers
  • Boel went 14-27 with 347 yards passing and three touchdowns. His 347 yards passing are the eighth most in a game in program history.
  • Andre Eden moved over 1,600 career rushing yards with 66 yards on 17 carries, while Colton Fahey caught five passes for 94 yards and Brendan King had six catches for 78.
  • Defensively, Bowdoin was led by nine tackles apiece from Koy Price and Max Jacobs. Price also had a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup while Jacobs had 1.5 sacks on the day.
  • Bowdoin finished the day with a 454-296 advantage in total yardage and had a 31:44-28:16 edge in time of possession.
Up Next
  • Bowdoin will return to Whittier Field, where it went 3-1 last year, for its home opener next Saturday, September 23, against Williams. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
