Volleyball Pulls Away Late To Defeat Bates in NESCAC Opener

LEWISTON, Maine – The Bowdoin College volleyball team dispatched Bates, 3-1, to earn its first NESCAC victory of the season on Friday night. The Polar Bears improve to 4-1 (1-0 NESCAC) while the Bobcats fall to 1-4 (0-1 NESCAC). The win is the ninth straight for Bowdoin over Bates, and 23rd in the last 24 meetings.
 
Match Highlights
  • Bowdoin took the win by set scores of 25-19, 21-25, 25-17, 25-17.
  • After splitting the first two sets, Bowdoin took command early in the third, sprinting to a 7-3 edge, and never looked back. With Bates trailing 16-12, the Polar Bears put away the Bobcats with a 6-2 run to take a 22-14 lead and eventual 25-17 win.
  • Bates claimed an early 4-3 lead in the fourth set, but Bowdoin took the lead for good with a 5-1 surge, and later rolled off a 6-2 run to put the match out of reach.
By The Numbers
  • Skye LaMendola racked up a team-high 12 kills and had 11 digs in the winning effort for Bowdoin while Cameron Shelly had ten kills and two aces.
  • Ella Haugen had 23 assists while Maya White led Bowdoin with 19 digs.
  • Nine different Polar Bears registered kills, and Bowdoin held Bates to just a .107 hitting percentage in the victory.
