Baseball Defeats Wesleyan and Advances In NESCAC Tournament Play

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Bowdoin College baseball team scored eight runs in the final two innings, rallying from an eighth-inning deficit to defeat Wesleyan University 10-4  in the decisive game three of their NESCAC Quarterfinal series Sunday.
 
 The Polar Bears (18-14) advance to the NESCAC finals site for the first time since 2013, and will play in the conference's double-elimination championship next weekend on the campus of Colby College. 
 
Game Highlights
  • The host Cardinals scored a run in both the first and second innings to go ahead 2-0.
  • Bowdoin broke through in the top of the third as CJ Brito-Trinidad tripled to center and drove in Kevin Murray to make it 2-1.
  • A solo homer off the bat of Ben McKenzie in the fifth inning tied the game.
  • Wesleyan pushed its lead back to one off an RBI single in the sixth.
  • Bowdoin rallied in the eighth to take its first lead of the game. Liam Foley singled to right center and plated Mike Moynihan and Brito-Trinidad.
  • The Polar Bears exploded for six runs in the final inning. With the bases loaded, Moynihan was hit by a pitch and pushed a runner home. Lukas Tsai tagged an RBI single and Nick Merrill added a two-run double down the left field line. Foley drove in two more runs with a single through the right side, making for a four RBI day.
  • Wesleyan managed a solo homerun in the bottom of the eighth, but could not overcome the deficit.
 
By the Numbers
  • Bowdoin combined for 11 hits. Foley recorded four RBI while going 3-for-5. Tsai and McKenzie both had two hits.
  • Luke Chessie pitched five innings and allowed seven hits with a pair of earned runs. Chessie fanned three batters.
  • Connor Cassady took the mound for three innings of work and allowed four hits with one earned run.
  • Jack Olcott closed out the ninth inning, allowing one hit and one run.
