BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College baseball team swept Bates College on Saturday, including a dramatic walk-off win in game one, to clinch a NESCAC postseason berth in the final games played at Pickard Baseball Diamond. With the 10-9 and 7-2 wins, the Polar Bears complete a series sweep of the Bobcats (16-15, 1-11 NESCAC) and improve to 16-12 (5-7 NESCAC).
Game One Highlights
- In one of the wildest games in recent history between the Route 196 neighbors, Bates jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first and still owned a 5-3 edge heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, needing a win to keep its postseason hopes alive.
- Bowdoin took the lead with a six-run outburst that included RBI singles by Nick Merrill, Ben McKenzie and Kevin Murray, and was capped by a two-run homer to left by C.J. Brito Trinidad.
- Bates didn't go away, trimming Bowdoin's lead to 9-8 in the fifth and tying the game with an RBI single by John Nowak in the sixth.
- Bowdoin appeared to have the game won in the bottom of the seventh, but a sensational diving catch by Jack Margiloff in left field kept the Polar Bears from scoring the game-winning run and forced extra innings.
- After Connor Cassidy made quick work of the Bobcats in the top of the eighth, Stephen Simoes appeared to have won it again for Bowdoin, but his blast to deep right was caught at the top of the wall.
- The very next batter Kevin Murray left little doubt, however, blasting a long home run that cleared the center field wall, giving Bowdoin the walk-off 10-9 win and clinching a playoff bid.
- The teams combined for 19 runs, 25 hits and seven errors in the game as Murray finished 3-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. McKenzie, Simoes, and Gabe Peckler also had two hits.
- Jack Mullen got the no decision, going 5.0 innings and allowing three earned runs. Connor Cassidy got the win in relief, tossing 3.0 innings without allowing an earned run.
Game Two Highlights
- Bowdoin made quick work of the Bobcats in game two, scoring three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to put the contest out of reach.
- Richie McNamara delivered the big blows for the Polar Bears, ripping a two-run double in the fourth and a two-run triple in the fifth.
- Christian O'Brien had three hits, two runs and three RBI in the win while Lukas Tsai added a pair of hits and two runs scored.
- Luke Chessie was fantastic on the mound, tossing 5.2 frames, allowing two hits and one walk to earn the win.
