Baseball Returns to Win Column With Win Over Farmington

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin baseball team returned to the win column with an 11-5 victory over visiting University of Maine-Farmington on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Polar Bears climb to 13-12 on the season. The Beavers drop to 5-25 on the year, including a pair of losses at Bowdoin.
 
Game Highlights
  • The Beavers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first off Ryan Sargent's sacrifice fly to left that plated the runner from third.
  • Bowdoin responded in the bottom of the inning as Will Bordes tagged an RBI single through the left side and pushed Chris Dirks home.
  • Aidan Carey gave Bowdoin the lead in the second. Carey took third on a wild pitch and came home on the resulting errant throw.
  • Farmington kept the game close with a fielder's choice equalizer in the third.
  • Grant Collins pushed the Polar Bears ahead once again in the fourth, singling to right for an RBI.
  • UMF took the lead in the top of the fifth. A fielder's choice play with the bases loaded took care of the advancing runner to second, but two more runners scored.
  • The back-and-forth game continued in the bottom half of the inning. Carey tagged a two-run single up the middle.
  • Farmington scored in the top of the seventh to make it 5-5.
  • The Polar Bears took control as Collins had another RBI single and Mike Moynihan hit a two-run double.
  • With runners on the corners in the eighth, Chris Dirks successfully crossed home plate on the double steal. Will Bordes later scored on a wild pitch. Luka Tsai capped the inning with an RBI double to right center.
 
By the Numbers
  • Moynihan was 2-for-5 with a double and triple. Grant Collins was also 2-for-5. Bordes was 3-for-5 with a double. Carey went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBI.
  • Jake Sullivan got the start and pitched 4.2 innings with three earned runs and four hits allowed.
  • Jackson Melendy earned the win with 2.1 innings of work and three hits allowed. Alex Saavedra and CJ Brito-Trinidad each pitched an inning of relief. Brito-Trinidad fanned a pair of batters.
