Baseball Comes Up Short in Friday Opener Against Colby

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin baseball team could not complete a ninth-inning rally after surrendering the lead in the eighth and fell 7-6 to Colby on Friday afternoon.
 
The Polar Bears are 12-10 (2-5 NESCAC), while the Mules climb to 19-7 (4-3 NESCAC).
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the third. With Liam Foley standing on third, Stephen Simoes sent a long sacrifice fly ball to center that drove in the run.
  • Colby took the lead in the fourth off a two-run homer to left field.
  • With the bases loaded in the sixth, Nick Merrill pushed a run home after being hit by a pitch. Liam Foley added a two-run single down the left field line to make it 4-2.
  • The Mules exploded for a five-run eighth to regain the lead.
  • Trailing 7-4, the Polar Bears clawed back within one run as Kevin Murray hit a two-run homer to center in the bottom of the ninth.
 
By the Numbers
  • Ben McKenzie and Foley both went 2-for-4 at the plate. Simoes was 2-for-3.
  • Jason Bogdanos started on the mound and pitched seven innings with five hits and three runs allowed. The sophomore fanned four batters.
  • Connor Cassady suffered the loss with one inning of work and four runs allowed.
  • Jacob Warren pitched the final three outs.

  • The two teams complete the series with a doubleheader in Waterville tomorrow at noon.
