Men's Lacrosse Falls in Last-Second Loss at Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. – Matt Adams scored the game-winning goal with nine seconds remaining to give eight-ranked Amherst a 13-12 win over 15th-ranked Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon. The Mammoths move to 7-1 (3-1 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears fall to 6-3 (2-3 NESCAC).
 
Game Highlights
  • In a back-and-forth affair that saw neither team pull away, Bowdoin was able to take an early 4-1 edge, capped by an Avery Kirby goal at 8:21 of the first quarter.
  • Amherst outscored Bowdoin 6-2 for the remainder of the opening half, and tied the game with five seconds before intermission to send the game into the half deadlocked 6-6.
  • Goals by Sam Raye-Steiner and Sam Powell gave Bowdoin an 8-7 edge midway through the third, but Amherst rolled off a 5-1 run, opening up its largest lead of the game, 12-9, with 9:10 left in the contest.
  • Bowdoin rallied, getting goals from Patrick Fitzgerald, Jason Lach and Will Byrne to tie the contest at 12 with 3:26 to go.
  • The Polar Bears had a possession to take the lead, but Oliver Bernstein's shot was saved by Mitch Likins with a minute to go.
  • Following an Amherst timeout, Adams rolled off a screen and delivered the game-winner with just nine seconds to go.
By The Numbers
  • Amherst held a 19-10 edge in faceoffs on the day and 52-42 edge in shots, but Bowdoin forced 27 turnovers.
  • Jason Lach and Will Byrne ended with two goals and an assist each, while Patrick Fitzgerald and Sam Raye-Steiner both also had two goals.
  • Zack Goorno had two assists, two ground balls and a caused turnover while Lach added two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
  • Robert Hobbs was excellent, stopping 17 shots in net for Bowdoin.
