Baseball Returns to Maine and Tears Past Thomas

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – The Bowdoin baseball team played its first in-state game of the season in a commanding 14-4 victory over Thomas on Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Polar Bears climb to 7-4 and drop the Terriers to 5-8. The two teams faced off on neutral territory at SMCC's oceanside field in South Portland.
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin plated three runs in both the first and second innings. Kevin Murray and Luke Chessie both recorded RBI in the first and Murray later scored on an error.
  • Murray added two more RBI in the second, singling to left. Prior to Murray's hit, Nick Merrill scored on a wild pitch.
  • Bobby Pearl and Ben McKenzie both drove in runs in the third.
  • Liam Foley added another RBI flyout in the fourth to make it 9-0.
  • Thomas broke through in the fifth, scoring two.
  • Bowdoin answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Stephen Simoes tagged an RBI double, while CJ Brito-Trinidad and Foley both tagged RBI singles. Another passed ball allowed Foley to later score.
  • Will Bordes accounted for Bowdoin's final run, scoring the sixth on a wild pitch.
  • The Terriers scored two more runs in the seventh but could not pull within striking distance.
 
By the Numbers
  • Simoes went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI, and three runs scored.
  • Brito-Trinidad was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored.
  • Murray was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.
  • Merrill was 2-for-2.
  • Eight pitchers took the mound for Bowdoin. Jake Sullivan, Jackson Melendy, and Jason Bogdanos all struck out two batters.

  • The weekend series against Middlebury has been moved due to the weather. There will be no games played on Saturday. The Polar Bears and Panthers will play a doubleheader on Sunday at Colby, starting at noon.
