Polar Bears and Continentals Split to Open NESCAC Softball Play

CLINTON, N.Y. – The Bowdoin softball team opened expanded NESCAC play with a doubleheader split at Hamilton on Friday afternoon.
 
The Polar Bears (8-8, 1-1 NESCAC) and Continentals (8-6, 1-1 NESCAC) played a regular season conference matchup for the first time. Bowdoin came away with a 7-5 game one win, but fell 8-0 in game two.
 
Game One Highlights
  • Hamilton started the game with three runs in the bottom half of the first inning. The Continentals hit back-to-back leadoff singles and loaded the bases with a walk. With one out, a single up the middle drove in one run. Hamilton followed up with a two-run double.
  • Bowdoin cut the deficit to 3-2 in the second as Sydney Lang blasted a two-run shot to right center.
  • Hamilton pushed the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the inning.
  • Another two-run homer from the Polar Bears, this time off the bat of Angelina Mayers, tied the game. Chloe Garcia gave the team its first lead with an RBI single to right center.
  • Hamilton tied the game up in the fourth, but Bowdoin again took the lead in the seventh.
  • Katryna Dukehart drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second off Garcia's at bat. Shea Sullivan drove Dukehart from second with a single up the middle. Kyla Gary drove in the game's final run with a single to short.
  • Despite a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh, Hamilton couldn't find two rebuttal runs. The Polar Bears ended the game with a double play.
  • Garcia was the only Bowdoin player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3.
  • Maddie Current pitched a complete game, allowing ten hits with four strikeouts.
 
Game Two Highlights
  • Bowdoin couldn't find its offense in game two. An RBI single in the first put the Continentals ahead and they added two more runs in the third.
  • Hamilton continued to gradually add to its lead with another two runs in the fifth.
  • A walk-off RBI double in the sixth game Hamilton the six-inning win.
  • Bowdoin managed just two hits in the game and drew a single walk. JK Bradley and Mayers both made successful contact.
  • Anna Halliday suffered the loss with ten hits allowed and five earned runs. Abby Allen pitched the final 2.1 innings and allowed four hits and three earned runs.
