Baseball Sweeps Fredonia Behind Offensive Explosion

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Bowdoin baseball team swept Fredonia in an early morning doubleheader on Wednesday.
 
The Polar Bears improve to 3-1 after defeating the Blue Devils (2-5) by a 7-1 margin in game one and 20-5 edge in game two.
 
Game One Highlights
  • Jack Mullen pitched five shutout innings with ten strikeouts and three walks. Mullen allowed two hits.
  • Jack Olcott and Luke Chessie each pitched an inning in relief.
  • The game remained tied 0-0 until an RBI single off the bat of Ben McKenzie in the fourth inning.
  • The Polar Bears gained some breathing room in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single from Kevin Murray and a three-run blast by Chessie.
  • Stephen Simoes and Murray each drove in a run in the sixth.
  • Fredonia spoiled the shutout game for Bowdoin with a run in the top of the seventh.
  • Simoes was the only Bowdoin batter with a multi-hit day, going 2-for-4.
 
Game Two Highlights
  • Bowdoin exploded for six runs to open the game. McKenzie scored the first run off an error, followed by a CJ Brito-Trinidad RBI single.
  • Brito-Trinidad eventually scored on another error and Dylan Locke added an RBI single. Richie McNamara drove in a pair of runs.
  • Fredonia scored in the bottom half of the inning off a bases-loaded fielder's choice.
  • The hits and runs kept coming for Bowdoin, who scored multiple runs in every inning but the seventh.
  • The Polar Bears plated two each in the third through fifth and another five in the sixth inning.
  • Simoes and Brito-Trinidad were both 2-for-3 with an RBI. Chris Aufiero went 2-for-2 with four RBI. McNamara posted a stat line of 2-for-4 with 5 RBI.
  • Five Polar Bears were hit by a pitch.
  • Aufiero hit his first collegiate homerun in the fourth.
  • Jake Sullivan pitched three innings with three K's and three walks.
  • Alex Saavedra struck out six in four innings of work, while walking three.
  • Sullivan gave up four hits and Saavedra allowed seven.
