Auburndale, Fla. – The Bowdoin baseball team opened the 2023 season with a doubleheader split against Westminster College on Monday evening.
The Polar Bears (1-1) defeated the Titans (4-4) 11-7 in game one, before falling 18-4 in game two.
Game One Highlights
- Bowdoin jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first off an RBI fly out from Kevin Murray and an RBI single off the bat of Luke Chessie.
- Westminster tied the game in the bottom half of the inning.
- The Titans took a 4-2 lead after RBI singles in the second and third.
- The Polar Bears regained the lead with a three-run fourth that included a Liam Foley triple.
- Chessie knocked a solo homerun over the left field fence in the fifth.
- The back-and-forth game continued in the bottom half of the inning with three more RBI hits by Westminster.
- The Polar Bears closed out the game with a five-run seventh. Murray and Chessie both tagged RBI doubles. With the bases loaded, Foley doubled to left and plated all three runners.
- Connor Cassady pitched the bottom of the seventh and earned two quick outs. A runner reached on an error, but Cassady closed out the game by fanning his final batter.
- Chessie went 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and a triple short of hitting for the cycle.
- Foley went 3-for-4 with four RBI.
- Jason Bogdanos started the game on the mound and went 4.1 innings with eight hits and six strikeouts.
- Jack Olcott and Jacob Warren each pitched, while Cassady earned the save with one inning of work and two strikeouts.
Game Two Highlights
- The Titans scored at least one run every inning but the fourth.
- Following three innings, Westminster had taken a 5-0 lead. The Polar Bears plated their first run in the bottom of the fourth off an RBI groundout from Chessie.
- Westminster again added a run in the fifth off a wild pitch and three on top of that in the sixth.
- The Polar Bears tried to rally late with three runs in the sixth. Chessie and Gabe Peckler each had RBI singles. Chessie scored on an error after Will Bordes put the ball into left.
- Westminster closed out the game with a nine run seventh.
- Bowdoin put six different pitchers on the mound.
