Tufts Pulls Away in Fourth Quarter to Defeat Women's Hoops

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Tufts University women's basketball team outscored Bowdoin 19-11 in the fourth quarter to pull away in a 66-54 win on Saturday afternoon in Morrell Gymnasium. The Polar Bears fall to 14-8 (3-5 NESCAC) while the Jumbos move to 16-6 (7-1 NESCAC).
 
Game Highlights
  • Despite a slow start from the field, Bowdoin was able to stay within striking distance of Tufts thanks to strong defense in the first half.
  • The Polar Bears forced eight turnovers in the second quarter and trailed 31-27 at the break after back to back layups from Carly Davey in the final minute.
  • Bowdoin opened the second half on a 7-2 run, and took the lead on a lay-up by Annie Boasberg early in the second half, 34-33.
  • Tufts regained their footing and got a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Sofia Gonzalez to carry a 47-43 edge into the fourth quarter.
  • Bowdoin went cold from there, shooting 3-20 in the final quarter including 11 missed layups as Tufts slowly pulled away.
  • Maggie Russell scored nine points and had nine boards in the final quarter as the Jumbos went 10-13 from the free throw line in the last stanza to secure the victory.

  • Tufts finished at 44% shooting for the game while Bowdoin went 28% from the field.
  • Bowdoin stayed close thanks to forcing 21 turnovers from the Jumbos which they cashed in for 18 points.
  • Sela Kay led Bowdoin with 17 points while Sydney Jones had 11 with five rebounds.
  • Annie Boasberg had eight points and seven steals for the Polar Bears.
