Mele Scores in Overtime To Push Polar Bears Past Panthers

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Bella Mele scored in overtime to hand the Bowdoin women's ice hockey team a 4-3 win after a late comeback push by Plymouth State.

The Panthers (3-5-0) trailed 3-0 going into the third period, but couldn't complete the rally in overtime. Bowdoin climbs to 5-3-0.

By the Numbers
  • Bowdoin went up 1-0 at 4:10 in the first, sparked by a rip from the left point on the stick of Elsa Cassidy. Cassidy fired toward net and Bella Mele deflected the puck before Gia Massari added another deflection for the goal.
  • The Polar Bears doubled their lead four minutes later. Mele put a shot on net and Ava Imposimato came in to clean up the rebound.
  • Malloy Clifford made it 3-0 with 3:13 remaining in the second frame. Clifford and Meghan Montanaro worked the puck off the goalie's pads, finally pushing it through.
  • The Panthers came out of the second intermission and scored two quick goals to come within one. The first came at 1:15 as Katie Porrello came down the right boards and wristed an uncontested shot.
  • Laura Castronova scored less than a minute later, winning the puck in front of the Plymouth State bench and skating into Bowdoin territory for another wrister from the right.
  • On the power play midway through the frame, Katie Porrello tied the game as she curved from the right to center and backhanded a shot past Abby Matusovich.
  • Mele showed patience with her goal in overtime. The first-year drew the goalie from left to right across the crease before tucking the puck away.
