Men's Hockey Scores Three Third Period Goals in Tie at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Bowdoin men's ice hockey team skated to a 3-3 overtime tie at Colby on Saturday evening.

The Polar Bears (3-1-1, 1-1-1 NESCAC) snapped a seven game losing streak to the Mules (2-1-2, 1-0-2 NESCAC) last March in the NESCAC playoffs. Saturday's tie is just the tenth all-time between the two programs who have faced off 220 times.

Game Highlights
  • The Mules scored with 7:52 remaining in the first period as Jake MacDonald intercepted a pass in the Bowdoin zone and found Ryan Doolin in front of the net. Doolan took a shot that Alex Kozic denied, but the rebound kicked to the right post where Reese Farrell put the goal away.
  • Colby went ahead 2-0 less than two minutes into the third as the Mules turned a two-on-one opportunity into a goal by Matthew MacDonald.
  • Bowdoin answered seconds later after winning the center ice faceoff and putting the puck into Colby's zone. Isaac Abbott fired a shot from the eft point and Bryce Bollman deflected the feed from in front to make it 2-1.
  • Will Forrest tied the game for Bowdoin with another goal less than a minute later. Bowdoin again won the faceoff and pinned Colby in the zone. Luke Wheeler connected a pass to Forrest on the right for tic-tac-toe sequence that set up a 2-2 game.
  • The goals kept coming with Justin Wright giving Bowdoin its first lead of the game at 7:04. Traffic in front of the net meant Nate Clark's shot from the blue line hit a body and kicked to Bryce Bollman who popped the puck to Wright on the left for a top shelf goal.
  • Colby forced overtime with an equalizer at 12:25 as Jack Sullivan put a shot through the screen from just inside Bowdoin's end.
  • Overtime provided quality scoring opportunities for both teams, but both Kozic and Andy Beran were solid in net.

By the Numbers
  • Bowdoin went 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Mules were 0-for-2.
  • Beran kept the Mules in the game with 47 saves, including five in overtime.
  • Kozic made 21 stops, with three in overtime.
  • Bowdoin won just over 50% of faceoffs, winning 46 out of 90.
