Women's Soccer Falls 2-1 to Amherst in NESCAC Championship

AMHERST, Mass. – The Bowdoin women's soccer team is the 2023 NESCAC Women's Soccer Runners-Up following a narrow 2-1 defeat at Amherst on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Polar Bears (9-4-5) earned the #3 seed for the NESCAC tournament and advanced to the conference finals for the first time since 2015. The top-ranked Mammoths earned the championship title with a 16-1-1 record.
 
Game Highlights
  • Amherst's only shot on goal in the first half came in the 20th minute. Brooke Ingemi received a pass in the box and quickly turned toward goal and took a shot. Charlotte Iannone easily scooped up the ball.
  • The Polar Bears took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute. Greta Farkas lined up a free kick eight yards from the top of the box. The senior booted a long arcing shot over everyone, including the outstretched arms of the goalie, and perfectly bent the ball to inside the top of the net.
  • The Mammoths tied the game ten minutes into the second half. Alyssa Huynh controlled the ball on the right wing and sent a long cross to the far side. Abby Schwartz went up for a header and connected above the hands of Iannone to make it 1-1.
  • With ten minutes remaining in regulation, Patience Kum scored the game-winning goal. A Bowdoin defender and Iannone came out to meet Kum, but the pair over-committed, and Kum was able to put the ball away.
 
By the Numbers
  • The Mammoths held a 12-6 edge in shots and 5-2 shots on goal advantage.
  • Amherst took four corner kicks and allowed two.
  • Iannone made three saves.
  • Mika Fisher stopped one shot.

  • The Polar Bears will likely receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament and wait to see their fate during the NCAA Selection Show scheduled for tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
