Second Half Goal Sends Women's Soccer to Second Round of NCAA Play

The Bowdoin women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015 after a 1-0 victory over Swarthmore on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears advance with a 10-4-5 overall record this season as Greta Farkas scored her team leading sixth goal of the year. The Garnet end the year with a 12-4-2 mark.

Game Highlights
  • The Polar Bears pressured the Garnet defense heavily in the first half. Bowdoin held a 9-5 edge in shots including five on net. Charlotte Iannone was forced to make just one save midway through the frame, elevating for a high right shot.
  • Lila Travers cut off a Polar Bear cross a little over ten minutes into the game and denied a promising opportunity for Bowdoin.
  • The Garnet escaped an early bid by the Polar Bears as the ball bounced over the goalie but was cleared away by the back line.
  • Farkas scored the game's lone goal in the 50th minute of action. The senior intercepted a clear attempt by a Swarthmore defender ten feet above the box on the left side. Farkas beat an approaching defender and bent a left footed shot over the hands of Lila Travers and just under the crossbar.
  • Bowdoin allowed just two shots on goal in the final ten minutes of action, but Iannone was there to make a pair of ground level saves.

By the Numbers
  • Bowdoin's offense owned a commanding 18-8 edge in shots, while the defense allowed just three shots on net. The Polar Bears forced Travers to make seven stops.
  • Iannone made all three stops that she needed to earn the shutout win.
  • Swarthmore held a slight 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
  • Head coach Brianne Smithson has taken Bowdoin teams to the second round twice before, in 2013 and '15, and the Polar Bears will look to break through against the undefeated William Smith Herons.
