GENEVA, N.Y. – For the first time in program history, the Bowdoin College women's soccer team is headed to the third round of the NCAA Tournament following a thrilling 1-0 overtime win against previously unbeaten William Smith on Sunday afternoon.
The Polar Bears (11-4-5) shock the seventh-ranked Herons (14-1-4), delivering the home team their first and final loss of the season. Bowdoin advances to play Tufts in the third round next Saturday, November 18 at a site to-be-determined. It will be the first "Sweet Sixteen" appearance in the storied 46-year history of the program.
Match Highlights
- The Herons controlled the first half and held a 7-3 edge in shots through 45 minutes of action.
- Emily Johnson challenged Charlotte Iannone just under four minutes into the game and forced the keeper to make a save at the top right corner. Johnson put another shot to the opposite corner in the 29th minute to account for William Smith's second shot on goal of the frame.
- Morgan Smiley accounted for Bowdoin's lone shot on goal in the first half, putting a ball in the air in the 32nd minute. It was the Polar Bears' third and final shot of the frame.
- The Polar Bears flipped the script in the second half and amped up the offensive pressure. Bowdoin held an 8-2 shot advantage during the second frame, capped by a last minute bid from Greta Farkas that soared over the right side of the crossbar.
- That pressure continued into overtime and eventually paid off in the second extra session. With just about six minutes left before penalty kicks, Bowdoin collected the ball to the left of the William Smith box. An initial cross was cleared by the Herons, but a second cross bounced loose to the foot of Mary Rainey, who settled at the top of the box, took one touch, pivoted around a defender and blasted a low shot to the bottom right corner, giving the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead at 104:34.
- William Smith could not muster another shot as the Polar Bears held on to the win.
By The Numbers
- Rainey has made the most of her two goals this season. Her first goal came in a 1-0 NESCAC quarterfinal win over Connecticut College, and she followed it up today with the game-winner in the NCAA second round.
- Bowdoin's defense, and goaltender Charlotte Iannone, was outstanding, as the Polar Bear netminder made five saves in the win.
- The Polar Bears owned a 15-11 edge in shots for the contest, and a 3-2 lead in corner kicks.
- Bowdoin's goal was just the ninth allowed by the Herons all season.
