ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Bowdoin women's soccer team saw its historic season come to an end against Tufts in a 3-2 regulation setback in the NCAA Third Round.
The Polar Bears advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in program history and end the year with an 11-5-5 record. The Jumbos continue their run in the tournament with a 10-5-4 record.
Game Highlights
- The Jumbos jumped out to an early lead with a successful penalty kick conversion in the tenth minute.
- Tufts doubled its lead three minutes later. Both teams converged in the box and the ball rattled around, rebounding out and finding Caroline Kelly and then Elsi Aires for a 2-0 lead.
- The Polar Bears cut their deficit in half at 55:51. Ten minutes into the second, Greta Farkas put away a penalty kick opportunity for Bowdoin.
- In the 75th minute, Tufts pushed its lead back to two as Aires and Kelly combined again. This time, Kelly sent a through ball ahead for Aires who ran on and buried a shot from 15 yards out.
- A minute later Stephanie Christianson polished off a left side endline cross from Morgan Smiley. Christianson, on the back right post, was wide open for a put away to pull Bowdoin back within one.
- Bowdoin's final shot of the game came off the foot of Kyra Hacker and forced Gigi Edwards to make a save to preserve the Tufts lead.
By the Numbers
- Tufts owned a 13-7 edge in shots, but only a slight 7-6 shots on goal advantage.
- Bowdoin took four corner kicks and allowed only two.
- Charlotte Iannone made four stops for Bowdoin.
- Edwards matched Iannone with four on the opposite side.
