Women's Soccer Advances On PKs to Play for NESCAC Championship

AMHERST, Mass. – The Bowdoin women's soccer team advanced to the NESCAC Championship for the first time since 2015 after advancing past Williams in penalty kicks on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears (9-3-5) found a goal in the 80th minute of regulation to tie the game at 1-1 and force two overtime periods and penalty kicks. The Ephs (9-3-5) downed Bowdoin 2-0 during their regular season matchup.

Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin recorded only one shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes of action. Following strong ball movement to push play into the Ephs defensive end, Mary Rainey booted a shot from the left side of the midfield towards net. The ball one-hopped into the hands of Margaret Huelin.
  • The Ephs broke through in the 26th minute to go ahead 1-0. Jaquelin Nordhoff took a corner kick from the left side and put the ball towards goal. The ball rattled around in the box before a defender tried to clear up the middle, only to see Blakeley Buckingham put it back toward net where Isabel Konijnenberg finished off a shot to the top right corner.
  • The Polar Bears found an equalizer in the 80th minute. Charlotte Iannone punted up the field to begin the sequence. A midfielder played the ball down and slipped the ball to the left win where Cadence Lee chipped the ball ahead. Ella Olcese ran onto the feed and beat a defender, drew the goalie, and put away a shot.
  • In the second overtime frame, Williams earned an early corner kick and put the ball directly into the hands of Iannone. Olcese nearly found a game-winner at the other end of the field with five minutes remaining. Olcese worked the ball along the right side of the box and put a sliding shot off the hands of the goalie at the near post.
  • Greta Farkas shot first for the Polar Bears in the shootout and buried the opening PK. Williams matched to make it 1-1. Bowdoin missed its next attempt and the Ephs successfully converted to make it 2-1. Bowdoin missed on the third opportunity, but Charlotte Iannone came up with a save to keep the shootout going.
  • Lo Hoglin began a streak of four straight Bowdoin conversations that also consisted of Emilia Tutun, Iannone, and Samaya Bernardo for the game-winner. On Williams' fifth attempt of the opening round, Iannone came up with a massive diving save to her left. Iannone turned around and buried her own PK to extend the shootout.
  • After Bernardo converted on the first opportunity of the second round of PKs, Iannone made a save to clinch the win for Bowdoin.
