Wheeler Scores In Overtime To Lift Polar Bears Past Panthers

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin men's ice hockey team flipped the script from Friday and won 4-3 in overtime against Middlebury.

The Polar Bears earn their first win of the season with a 1-1-0 (1-1-0 NESCAC) record. The Panthers leave Maine at 0-1-1 (0-1-1 NESCAC).

Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin broke through just 2:22 into the game. Michael Dinges stripped the puck off a defender in the right corner and fed Bryce Bollman in front of the net for a quick receive and release.
  • The first-year scoring trend continued as Richard Davis got his first collegiate goal. Davis took the puck off a defender near the right boards and passed over to Patrick Callahan. Callahan passed back to Davis who buried a shot inside the left post.
  • The Panthers scored their first goal of the season 8:05 into the second period. Middlebury banked the puck off the boards behind their own net to Ryan Pineault in the corner. Pineault sent a pass up ice, with a slight tip along the way by Wyatt Pastor, that found Andrej Hromic in the neutral zone. Hromic skated with a defender and moved left to right from circle to circle in the Bowdoin zone, finally beating Kozic with a hard forehand shot.
  • Hromic scored Middlebury's second of the game, making it 2-2, with just 25 seconds remaining in the second period. Jin Lee worked deep in the left corner in Bowdoin's zone and came away with the puck along the back. Lee centered a pass up to Hromic in front of the crease for a one-timer.
  • Middlebury took the lead 2:42 into the final period. Kevin Golden centered the puck from the left corner and deflected his feed off a defender's skate and into the net.
  • Patrick Callahan tied the game for Bowdoin three minutes later. Callahan carried into the zone and passed right to Justin Wright. Wright connected with Nate Clark on the right point for a blast on net. Callahan skated in and deflected Clark's shot to tie the game.
  • Bowdoin scored just 12 seconds into overtime as Luke Wheeler skated from center ice, beat a defender, dragged across the goal face and finished off his own play as he slid to the ice.
