Men's Basketball Pulls Away in Second Half to Earn Double-Digit Win at Bates

LEWISTON, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's basketball team dominated the second half and pulled away for a convincing 79-63 win at Bates on Wednesday evening. The Polar Bears pick up their first win of the season in the non-conference meeting between the schools and improve to 1-2. The Bobcats remain winless at 0-2 this season.
 
Game Highlights
  • Highlighted by 16 points from James McGowan, the Polar Bears and Bobcats traded the lead numerous times in the opening half before settling in for a 35-35 tie heading into the break.
  • Bates opened a four-point lead early in the second half, and led 44-41 with under 15 minutes to play.
  • A Kevin Reeves put-back and three-pointer by McGowan regained the lead for Bowdoin, sparking a 16-4 surge that gave the Polar Bears the lead for good.
  • Bowdoin pushed the lead into double digits with under eight minutes to play and Bates could get no closer than ten for the remainder of the contest.

  • Kevin Reeves scored all 15 of his points in the second half, sparking the Bowdoin effort. He also added ten rebounds in the win.
  • James McGowan finished with 26 points and ten boards, including four three-pointers and an 8-8 effort from the free throw line.
  • Alex Halpern (12 points, six assists) and Afamdi Achufusi (ten points, nine rebounds, three steals) also reached double digits for Bowdoin.
  • The Polar Bears finished at 41% shooting for the game, and held Bates to 39%. Bowdoin owned a 50-35 edge on the glass, and converted 21 second chance points in the victory.
  • The Polar Bears also scored 20 points off 12 Bates turnovers.
