Field Hockey Scores Late to Earn 3-2 Win Against Amherst

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Caroline Higgins scored a last minute goal to lift the Bowdoin field hockey team to a 3-2 win against Amherst on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Polar Bears (8-3, 3-3 NESCAC) never trailed the Mammoths (6-5.4-4 NESCAC).
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin scored with five minutes remaining in the first quarter to go ahead 1-0. Maddie Mrva took a slip pass from Georgie Coetzer at the top of the circle and sent a shot towards net. Faith Jennings got the toe of her stick on the ball and deflected the shot past Amherst's keeper.
  • The Polar Bears doubled their lead just 46 seconds into the second quarter. Following a flurry in front of the net, Mackay Bommer tracked down the loose ball and banged home the 2-0 tally.
  • Amherst cut the lead in half in the 35th minute with a successful penalty stroke by Justine Liguori.
  • The Mammoths tied the game 3:38 into the final quarter. Kat Mason took a shot that was denied by Julia Arsenault. Kate Smith came in and cleaned up the rebound.
  • With the clock winding down and the score knotted at 2-2, Higgins found the game winner off a penalty corner. Higgins inserted to Coetzer who slipped the ball to Mrva who sent a sweep towards the far left post. Higgins muscled through a defender to put away the ball with 2:40 remaining in regulation.

  • Bowdoin held a 12-7 edge in total shots and 8-4 shots on goal advantage.
  • Bowdoin took 12 penalty corners and allowed four.
  • Julia Arsenault ended the day with one save. Melissa Shunk recorded a defensive save.
  • Sara Nidus made four stops.
