Women's Soccer Secures Home Quarterfinal with 3-2 Win Against Tufts

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin women's soccer team wrapped up the regular season with a 3-2 win at home against Tufts.
 
The Polar Bears wrap up the regular season with an 8-3-4 record. The Jumbos are 7-4-4 (3-4-3 NESCAC). Bowdoin clinched the three seed for the NESCAC tournament.
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin scored in the 19th minute to take a 1-0 lead. A free kick into the box results in the ball banging around in traffic, with Kyra Hacker tracking down the ball and turning on net to fire a right footed shot past the goalie.
  • Hacker took a corner kick from the left side and kept the ball low into the box. Morgan Smiley quickly connected to put the Polar Bears ahead 2-0 in the 36th minute.
  • Waverly Sumner hit a no angle shot from the left edge of the box to make it 2-1 with less than three minutes remaining in the half.
  • Greta Farkas pushed the lead back to two with a successful penalty kick in the 56th minute.
  • Sumner kept the game tight with a rebuttal goal just two minutes later. Sumner dribbled around a defender to make space and put a shot to the near left post.
  • Charlotte Iannone came up with a save on a header in the final seven minutes to deny Tufts' final shot of the game.
 
By the Numbers
  • Tufts outshot Bowdoin 16-15, but the Polar Bears proved more accurate with an 11-8 edge in shots on goal.
  • Both teams earned three corner kicks.
  • Iannone picked up six saves in the win.
  • Gigi Edwards turned away eight shots.
