Field Hockey Falls in Shootout at Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Bowdoin field hockey team rallied to force double overtime but fell in the second round of a penalty shootout at Wesleyan on Saturday.
 
The Polar Bears are 10-4 (5-4 NESCAC). The Cardinals climb to 9-5 (5-4 NESCAC). The game was 2-2 following regulation and goes down as a 3-2 loss after the shootout victory for Wesleyan.
 
Game Highlights
  • Wesleyan scored both of its regulation goals in the first quarter. The first game two minutes into play on a penalty corner. Georgia Adams deflected a sweep from Imani Ochieng on the right of the stroke line.
  • Two minutes later, the Cardinals doubled their lead. Wesleyan scored on another corner as the offense connected passes at the top of the circle and eventually found Kenzie Kelly at the right post. Kelly's first shot was turned away but she buried her own rebound.
  • Bowdoin chipped away with a penalty corner goal ten minutes into the second quarter. Georgie Coetzer blasted a drive into the goal off an insert from Caroline Higgins.
  • The Polar Bears forced overtime as Emily Ferguson found net. Ferguson worked behind the goalie on the right side and finished off an initial feed from the left.
  • Overtime saw opportunities for both sides. Caroline Higgins carried down the right side but had a promising cross blocked up in double overtime.
  • Julia Arsenault came out to make a slide tackle and deny a game-winner, before the Polar Bear defense successfully survived four straight corners.
  • Bowdoin trailed 1-0 after the first round of the shootout, but Arsenault made four straight saves after the initial pairing.
  • Faith Jennings converted as Bowdoin's third shooter and the teams went into a second batch after tying 1-1 through five attempts.
  • Wesleyan's Melanie Lim scored on the first play of the second round and Maddie Mrva was unsuccessful in her counter.
 
By the Numbers
  • Bowdoin outshot the Cardinals 11-3 and 7-3 in shots on goal.
  • Bowdoin earned 14 corners and allowed eight.
  • Arsenault made one save.
  • Audrey Pace made five stops.
