Third Period Rally Pushes Polar Bears Past Amherst in Men's Hockey

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin men's ice hockey team scored a pair of third period goals to come from behind and topple NESCAC leading Amherst 3-2 on Friday evening.

The Polar Bears (8-1-1, 4-1-1 NESCAC) handed the Mammoths (6-3-2, 5-1-0 NESCAC) their first setback in conference action.

Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin scored 3:40 into the game to take a 1-0 lead. Albert Washco picked the puck off the stick of Andy Stoneman in the right corner and circled around the back boards. Washco made a flat pass to Luke Wheeler at the top of the crease for a one-timer.
  • Joey Verkerke evened the score just under five minutes into the second period. Verkerke intercepted a clearing pass at the Bowdoin blue line and fired a shot past Alex Kozic.
  • The Mammoths took the lead midway through the frame as Josh Burke made a point-to-point pass to Greg McGunigle. McGunigle fired from the left and Tyler Bourque put back the rebound.
  • Six minutes into the final period, Bowdoin tied the game. Patrick Callahan controlled the puck low on the left boards and found Stoneman in front of the net. Stoneman finished off the feed through traffic on the near post.
  • Bowdoin's game-winner game with 3:38 remaining. Stoneman carried down the left side and sent a centering pass to a sliding Chris Brown coming down the slot. Brown finished off the feed from the prone position to tally the go-ahead goal.
