Women's Hoops Pulls Away From Colby in Second Half For Key NESCAC Win

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's basketball team used a big third quarter to pull away from Colby in a 52-43 victory Saturday afternoon in Morrell Gymnasium. The Polar Bears improve to 13-6 (2-3 NESCAC) while the Mules fall to 6-10 (2-3 NESCAC).
 
Game Highlights
  • After a cold start, Bowdoin picked up speed in the second quarter, shooting 58% from the field and building an 11-point lead, 27-16, following a Jess Giorgio hoop with 3:13 to go in the first half.
  • Sophie Webb answered with a three-pointer for Colby, sparking a half-ending 10-0 run that trimmed Bowdoin's lead to 27-26 at the break.
  • The Polar Bears took control in a 14-2 third quarter that included a 12-0 surge to start the period, capped by a driving layup from Sela Kay that made the score 39-26.
  • Colby didn't score until 50 second remaining in the stanza and trailed 41-28 entering the fourth.
  • The Mules closed the gap to five points with under five minutes to play but could get no closer. The Polar Bears secured the win with a game-closing 7-2 run.
By The Numbers
  • Bowdoin overcame 37% shooting with outstanding defense, holding Colby to 32% from the field and forcing 24 turnovers.
  • Sela Kay led Bowdoin with 14 points while Sydney Jones added 12 with five steals and three assists.
  • Jess Giorgio had eight points and five rebounds while Annie Boasberg had nine rebounds and four steals.
  • Caroline Smith led Colby with 12 points.
