Women's Soccer Mutes Monks in Season Opener

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin women's soccer team opened the season with a 5-0 victory over visiting Saint Joseph's College on Wednesday night.
 
The Polar Bears begin the year at 1-0-0 and drop the Monks to 0-3-0. Bowdoin begins the season 1-0-0 for the second consecutive season.
 
Game Highlights
  • After a back and forth battle through the opening 20 minutes of play, Samaya Bernardo controlled the ball in the midfield and made a left-footed through pass to Morgan Smiley. Smiley stutter-stepped to time a perfect low right-footed shot to the opposite corner.
  • Ella Olcese added another goal with under six minutes to play in the first half. Olcese made a solo effort to shake a defender and pull the ball left before booting a shot just under the crossbar.
  • With under a minute remaining in the half, Emilia Tutun connected a clean cross from the right side to the foot of Stephanie Christianson. Christianson redirected the pass in for a 3-0 lead.
  • Less than a minute into the second period, Bowdoin earned a corner kick and set up another goal producing play. The ball was launched into the box and headed towards Becca Meyers who set up a volley goal for Olivia Rayis.
  • Bowdoin's final goal came as Isa Quintana carried down the left side and made a low cross to Tutun for the finish.
 
By the Numbers
  • Bowdoin held a 21-1 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Polar Bears earned six corner kicks and allowed three to the Monks.
  • Alex Arndt earned the shutout with one saves for Bowdoin.
  • Carley Downey started in net and played the first half with six saves for Saint Joseph's.
  • Manuela Mejia made nine saves in the second frame.
