Field Hockey Starts Strong With Season Opening Win at UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Bowdoin field hockey team pinned a 4-1 season opening setback on host University of New England on Wednesday evening.
 
The Polar Bears start the year with a 1-0 record and keep the Nor'Easters winless at 0-2.

Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin got on the board 4:59 into the game off a penalty corner. Georgie Coetzer lined up a drove from the top of the circle and Caroline Higgins deflected the ball past UNE's goalie.
  • A scrum in the circle with 2:29 remaining in the first quarter set the stage for a second Higgins goal. Jill Cloonan deflected the ball to the left post where Higgins redirected for another tally.
  • Five minutes into the second quarter Almira Arnold salvaged a broken corner. Tracking down a rebound that traveled to the left of the stroke line, Arnold gave the Polar Bears a 3-0 lead.
  • Just a minute later Coetzer converted on a penalty corner.
  • UNE spoiled the shutout seven minutes into the third quarter. A bouncing ball deflected back to corner inserter Kate Lindmark and deflected in for the Nor'Easters lone goal.
 
By the Numbers
  • Bowdoin held a 21-5 shot advantage with an 11-2 shots on goal edge.
  • Bowdoin allowed two corners and earned 12 offensive corners.
  • Julia Arsenault made one save to earn the win.
