LEWISTON, Maine – The Bates field hockey team used a pair of first quarter goals and held off a late Bowdoin rally to pin a 2-1 setback on the visiting Polar Bears.
The Bobcats (2-0, 1-0 NESCAC) had not defeated the Polar Bears (1-1, 0-1 NESCAC) since 1984.
Game Highlights
- Bates controlled the first quarter, getting off ten shots in the frame. With five minutes remaining in the quarter, Maria Femia bested the Bowdoin defense and drove a direct shot into the back of the net.
- A minutes later the Bobcats made it 2-0. Capitalizing on a corner, Paige Cote fired a shot from the top of the circle and watched as Anna Cote tipped it in.
- Bowdoin found its lone goal of the game 3 minutes into the final frame. Georgie Coetzer ripped a shot on a penalty corner and Andrea DiTeodoro tipped the ball to pull Bowdoin within one.
By the Numbers
- Bates outshot the Polar Bears by a 16-6 margin and 6-2 edge in shots on net.
- The Bobcats held an 11-4 corner advantage.
- Julia Arsenault made four saves, while Kaili Jacobsen stopped one shot.
