LAST WEEK
Bowdoin rallied late, but couldn't overcome an early deficit in a 24-14 setback at Williams. Middlebury is off to a 2-0 start following wins over Amherst and Wesleyan to begin the season.Â
QUICK START
It was a tale of two weeks for the Polar Bear offense, which struck quickly in their opener against Hamilton two weeks ago, scoring touchdowns on their first three possessions of the game en route to a rout of the Continentals. Against Williams last week, the Polar Bears had the ball in Eph territory on three occasions in the first quarter, but came away scoreless.Â
POLAR BEAR LEADERS Â
Tailback
Andre Eden picked up where he left off in 2021, and currently leads in the NESCAC in rushing (189 yards, 94.5/game) after two weeks of action. Quarterback
Andrew Boel is third in the league in pass efficiency (155.0), fourth in passing yards (227.0/game) and first in completion percentage (68.6).
Brendan King (88.5 yards/game) and
Jed Hoggard (80.0 yards/game) are fourth and fifth in the NESCAC, respectively, in receiving yards. Defensively,
Max Jacobs is fifth in the conference with 18 total tackles. As a team, Bowdoin is fourth in the league in total yards (349.0/game) and second in the league in total defense (257.5/game).Â
STAT OF THE DAY
Bowdoin's
Liam Wholey recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown in the fourth quarter against Williams last weekend, giving the Polar Bears their first defensive touchdown since linebacker Joe Gowetski scored with a fumble recovery against Colby in November of 2019.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
The Panthers are back to their usual high-flying passing ways in 2022, having thrown the ball 78 times in the first two weeks (compared to just 51 attempts for Bowdoin) and quarterback Ben Tauber leads the league in passing yards/game (280.5) and completions (48). Middlebury's rush offense has totaled just 133 yards on the ground in two contests, and the Panthers are fifth in the NESCAC at 347.0 yards of offense per game. Defensively, Middlebury has surrendered the seventh-most yards in the league (322.5/game) but has been stingy in the red zone, not allowing an opposing touchdown in four visits this year and leading the conference in scoring defense (8.0 points/game)
LAST MEETING
Last year in Vermont, the teams played a wild game that featured 42 combined points in the fourth quarter of a 42-35 Middlebury win. The game was one of
Andre Eden's finest as a Polar Bear, as he racked up 160 yards rushing and three touchdowns. In all, the teams combined for 77 points and 980 yards of total offense in the contest.Â
BOWDOIN vs. MIDDLEBURY - ALL TIME
Despite the long-time rivalry between the schools in most sports, the football teams have played just 26 times due to the NESCAC's rotating schedule prior to 2018. Middlebury has won seven straight in the series dating back to 2012 with Bowdoin's last win coming in 2009 (the teams didn't play in 2010, '11, '14, '16 and '20).Â
