BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin women's soccer team secured a key 3-1 conference win over visiting Middlebury on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears (6-1-0, 2-1-0 NESCAC) earned their first victory over the Panthers (5-2-0, 1-2-0 NESCAC) since September 2017, snapping a four game winless streak.
Game Highlights
- Bowdoin took the 1-0 lead in the 29th minute of play. Middlebury's goalie Carolyn Kelley came out to take a goal kick and muffed the play. Morgan Smiley collected the ball and came back in for a nearly empty-net goal.
- The two teams played strong defense on either end of the pitch, but Bowdoin was able to break through again in the 66th minute. Lo Hoglin carried the ball right of center and passed back left to Smiley. Smiley ran onto the bouncing ball and connected for a near left post goal that skimmed across the grass.
- With ten minutes remaining, Samaya Bernardo broke past a defender and fired a shot from dead center, top of the box. The ball buried itself in the bottom right corner to make it 3-0.
- Middlebury spoiled the shutout with a tally three minutes later. Ellie Bavier lined up a free kick 15 yards out from the box. Bavier drilled a shot over the wall and over the hands of Alex Arndt.
By the Numbers
- Middlebury held a slight 10-8 edge in shots, but Bowdoin held an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal.
- The Panthers took three corner kicks to Bowdoin's two.
- Kelley made five saves in net, while Arndt made four stops.
