Bowdoin Storms Hamilton In Season-Opening Football Victory

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College football team dominated from the start in an authoritative 41-13 triumph over Hamilton in its season-opener on Saturday at Whittier Field. The victory is the first season-opening win for the Polar Bears (1-0) since 2009.

Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin sprinted to a 28-0 halftime lead and never looked back, overwhelming the Continentals from the opening whistle.
  • The Polar Bears took the opening kickoff and marched 70 yards in eight plays, with Andrew Boel finishing off the drive with a one-yard quarterback sneak to give the hosts an early lead.
  • After a Hamilton punt, Bowdoin covered 79 yards in nine plays, scoring on a sideline pass from Boel to Jed Hoggard from 30 yards out to make it 14-0 after one quarter.
  • On the first play of the second quarter, following a Continental three-and-out, Boel lofted a perfect fade to Hoggard again, who sprinted 72 yards to paydirt and a 21-0 advantage.
  • Bowdoin made it 28-0 at the break with a 10-play, 54-yard drive that ended in an Andre Eden one-yard plunge.
  • Hamilton cut into Bowdoin's lead following a turnover early in the third quarter, with Kamau Hopewell scoring from two yards out to make it 28-6.
  • Bowdoin answered with its lengthiest drive of the day – 13 plays covering 85 yards – ending in a perfect back-shoulder strike from Boel to Colton Fahey from eight yards out.
  • Tim Cronin capped the scoring with a one-yard TD for Bowdoin with 2:40 to go.
  • Hamilton added a late TD on a 28-yard pass from Matt Banbury to make it a 41-13 final score.
By The Numbers
  • Andrew Boel started the game with 11 straight completions and finished 17-20 for 249 yards and three touchdown passes, posting the best completion percentage in a single game in school history (85%) with 20 or more attempts, and the best by a Bowdoin QB since Rip Kinkle went 9-10 against Bates in 1978.
  • Bowdoin's 41 points were the most since the Polar Bears scored 50 against Middlebury in 2009 which was coincidentally their last win in a season-opener.
  • Andre Eden surpassed the century mark in rushing by halftime and finished with 124 yards on 23 carries with a touchdown while Tim Cronin carried 12 times for 42 yards. Bowdoin posted 194 yards rushing on the day.
  • Jed Hoggard caught three passes, including two touchdowns, for 109 yards while Brendan King had five catches for 80.
  • Bowdoin's defense held Hamilton to just 246 yards of offense – 171 prior to the final drive of the game – and was led by 12 tackles from Max Jacobs, who had four stops for a loss.
  • Koy Price added seven tackles and a breakup. Drew Ortiz and Aidan Reidy had 1.5 sacks each.
  • For Hamilton, Banbury went 23-33 for 201 yards and a touchdown.
