WHERE WE LEFT OFF
The Polar Bears showed flashes of promise in the 2021 campaign as a number of underclassmen stepped into prominent roles with record-breaking results. Despite finishing 1-8, Bowdoin found itself with second half leads in four games and were within a single score (or leading) in the fourth quarter of their last six games of the campaign. Hamilton had a similar season in 2021, ending the year 2-7 with wins over Bowdoin and Colby, and dropping a pair of games late in the season in in the final moments.Â
LOOKING AHEAD Â
Bowdoin returns its leading passer (quarterback
Andrew Boel), leading rusher (
Andre Eden), and leading receiver (
Colton Fahey) from last year's squad; all three of whom posted top-five statistical seasons in program history last fall. In all, Bowdoin returns nine of 11 starters on offense and defense, including All-NESCAC defensive lineman Drew Oritz. Bowdoin ranked sixth in total offense (343.6) and averaged 18.0 points per game while ranking sixth in total defense (368.1), permitting 27.4 points per contest last fall.Â
SCOUTING THE CONTINENTALS
The Continentals return leading rusher Kamau Hopewell and All-NESCAC receiver/returner Saleh Eltayeb on the offensive side of the ball as well as both quarterbacks- Matt Banbury and Joe Cairns. All-NESCAC defensive back Christian Snell anchors the Hamilton defense, which ranked last in the conference in total yards (404.8/game) last season. The Continentals offense ranked eighth in yards (295.4) and averaged 14.2 points per game in 2021.Â
LAST MEETING
Bowdoin outgained Hamilton, but was victimized by miscues in a season-opening loss last year in Clinton. In his collegiate debut,
Andre Eden rushed for 106 yards on 22 carries. Bowdoin's defense was led by
Dan Fiore's team-high eight tackles and
Ty Jones-Garland's seven. The Polar Bears held Hamilton to just 57 yards passing on the day and forced five punts. The Continentals did almost all of their damage on the ground, rushing for 190 yards as a team and forcing three Bowdoin turnovers.Â
BOWDOIN vs. HAMILTON - ALL TIME
The teams have played 37 times with Hamilton holding an 22-15 advantage all-time. Hamilton has won five straight meetings after a three-game Bowdoin winning streak in the series. Recently, home field advantage has proved crucial; the host team has won ten of the last 13 meetings.
