BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's soccer team remained perfect on the season, making a first-half goal stand up in a 1-0 shutout of the University of New England on Wednesday night. The Polar Bears, who held a 30-6 advantage in shots, improve to 4-0-0 on the year while the Nor'easters fall to 3-2-0.
Game Highlights
- The Polar Bears controlled the pace of play from the outset and were able to cash in after a sustained possession in the 17th minute.
- A turnover by the Nor'easter defense came to the foot of Isa Quintana, who toed the ball ahead to Morgan Smiley. Smiley blasted a low, left-footed shot to the far post to give Bowdoin a 1-0 lead.
- That proved to be all the Polar Bears would need, as Bowdoin held the Nor'easters to just one shot on goal, and none over the final 53 minutes of action.
By The Numbers
- Smiley's goal was her fifth of the season and marked the fourth consecutive game with a goal for the junior striker. Smiley is the first Polar Bear to score a goal in four straight games since Kiersten Turner in 2013.
- Alex Arndt and the Polar Bear defensive unit locked down the Nor'easters in their third shutout of the season. Arndt was forced to make one save in the victory as her GAA dropped to 0.31 on the year.
- Bowdoin owned a 30-6 advantage in shots and 8-1 edge in shots on goal. The Polar Bears had nine corner kicks and were called for six offsides in the contest.
