LEWISTON, Maine –
Ben McKenzie set a new program record with six hits against Bates in game two of the Bowdoin baseball team's Saturday split against Bates on. Bowdoin rebounded from an 11-3 game one loss to blast the Bobcats 17-4 in game two.
The previous record of five hits had been matched numerous times, most recently in 2011 by Matt Ruanee against St. Olaf in 2011. McKenzie is the first Polar Bear to tally six hits in a game and nearly hit for the cycle in doing so, as the center fielder was one triple shy. The Polar Bears are 15-17 on the season with an 8-4 record in conference play. The Bobcats are 7-25 (2-10 NESCAC).
Game One Highlights
- Bowdoin went ahead 3-0 in the top of the third. Luke Chessie had an RBI double down the left field line and CJ Brito-Trinidad and Robbie Sarmanian both had run producing singles.
- Bates erupted for seven runs in the bottom half of the inning and plated another in the fourth.
- The Bobcats finished off their offensive output with three runs in the fifth.
- Brito-Trinidad went 3-for-4 and Chessie was 2-for-4. Gavin Cann joined the pair as the Polar Bears who knocked a double in the game.
- Bowdoin's pitching staff combined for seven strikeouts and 13 hits allowed with six earned runs.
Game Two Highlights
- Bowdoin kicked the bats into high gear in game two. The Polar Bears produced 17 runs and 19 hits over nine innings.
- Chessie got the scoring started in the first with a single to center.
- Ben McKenzie blasted a two-run shot to right center to begin a five-run third for Bowdoin.
- Gavin Cann added a two-run triple to right center and Sarmanian plated Cann off a single.
- A bases loaded play in the fourth allowed McKenzie to score.
- Chessie had a three-run shot over the left center fence in the fifth to make it 12-0.
- Christian O'Brien drew a bases loaded walk in the sixth, following McKenzie's second double of the day and third RBI.
- Bates finally broke through with three runs in the sixth.
- Brito-Trinidad had the team's third homer of the game in the eighth and accounted for two more runs.
- Aiden Carey capped the game with an RBI double to right center.
- Chessie earned the win with five innings of work and three hits allowed.
- McKenzie was outstanding with a 6-for-6 outing and five runs scored in addition to five RBI.

- The Polar Bears conclude the regular season at Saint Joseph's on May 3 at 5:00 p.m.
- The full NESCAC Championship field will be settled following the completion of league play on Sunday but regardless of the results, the Polar Bears have secured hosting rights for a quarterfinal series next weekend at Pickard Field. They will be the first postseason games for the program at home since hosting the NESCAC Championship in 2006.
