Tufts Deals Bowdoin Softball Tough-Luck Sweep

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Tufts University softball team swept Bowdoin in a doubleader on Saturday in Medford, claiming game one by a 9-1 score before edging the Polar Bears in extra innings in game two, 6-5. With the losses, Bowdoin falls to 6-9 on the year.

Game One Highlights
  • The Polar Bears hung tough in game one, trailing 2-1 in the fourth following a leadoff walk by Lilly Armstrong, who came around to score on a wild pitch later in the frame.
  • The Jumbos put the game out of reach with five runs in the fourth inning, however, and one-hit the Polar Bears in the victory.
  • Angelina Mayers accounted for Bowdoin's hit, a double. Shea Sullivan (2-2) took the loss in the circle for the Polar Bears.
Game Two Highlights
  • Bowdoin bounced back in a dramatic night cap, only to see Tufts rally twice in their final at-bats to come away with the win.
  • The Polar Bears built a 2-0 lead on runs from Kasey Cunningham and Katryna Dukehart early in the game, but Tufts scored three times in the sixth to claim the lead, 3-2.
  • Bowdoin rallied to reclaim the lead in the seventh on a triple by Karlye Pallotta that scored Shea Sullivan. Pallotta came home later in the inning on a groundout by Lilly Armstrong to give Bowdoin a 4-3 lead.
  • Tufts tied it in the seventh to force extra innings, and Bowdoin grabbed the lead again on a Caroline Sablone RBI single that scored Cunningham.
  • But a two out, two-run single by Tufts in the bottom of the frame completed the comeback win for the hosts, 6-5.
  • Kasey Cunningham had two hits and two runs scored for Bowdoin in the loss while Anna Halliday went the distance in the tough-luck loss, allowing five earned runs in 9.2 innings pitched.
Up Next
  • Bowdoin will look to rebound in their home opener Sunday; a doubleheader against Maine-Presque Isle beginning at noon.
