Men's Lacrosse Extends Winning Streak in NESCAC Win Over Amherst

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team used a dominant second quarter to knock off Amherst, 15-12, in a battle of nationally-ranked teams on Saturday at Whittier Field. The 11th-ranked Polar Bears improve to 9-0 (5-0 NESCAC) with their first win over the Mammoths since 2014. The 15th-ranked Mammoths drop to 4-4 (2-2 NESCAC) with the loss.
 
Game Highlights
  • After Amherst scored the game's opening goal, Bowdoin went on a 4-1 run to close the first quarter, sparked by a pair of goals from Donal Mullane.
  • Brock Gonzalez netted a man-up goal to open the second quarter, trimming Bowdoin's lead to 4-2, but the Polar Bears responded with a 7-0 run, keyed by a pair of tallies from Jason Lach, to open up an 11-3 advantage.
  • Amherst scored twice in the final 3:17 of the half to cut the lead to 11-5 at the break.
  • Bowdoin maintained a 13-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter before a three-goal run by Amherst closed the gap to 13-10 with 12:46 on the clock.
  • Amherst had a pair of possessions to cut into the lead further, but a great save by Robert Hobbs led to a fast break goal by Donal Mullane at 8:51, increasing Bowdoin's lead to four goals, 14-10. The Mammoths would get no closer than three goals for the rest of the contest.

  • Donal Mullane headlined Bowdoin's win with a nine-point performance on five goals and four assists.
  • Jason Lach had three goals and two assists while Will Byrne had three goals and an assist for the Polar Bears.
  • Robert Hobbs was outstanding again in net for the Polar Bears, stopping 16 shots.
  • Ethan Barnard won 17 of 30 faceoffs for Bowdoin, who owned a 35-22 edge in ground balls.
