Fitzgerald's Seven Goals Leads Men's Lacrosse To Blowout Win Over Colby

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Patrick Fitzgerald scored seven goals to lead the Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team to its 12th straight win to open the season, 20-9, over Colby on Wednesday night at Whittier Field. The seventh-ranked Polar Bears move to 12-0 (8-0 NESCAC) while the Mules drop to 4-6 (1-6 NESCAC).
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin took a 5-1 lead after 12:30 of play thanks to goals from five different players: Zack Goorno, Will Byrne, Patrick Fitzgerald, Oliver Bernstein and Chris Fowler.
  • Colby stormed back with three goals in the final 1:23 of the frame to cut it to 5-4 after one period of action.
  • Bowdoin answered quickly, scoring immediately off the draw from Ethan Barnard, who won the faceoff and scored six seconds into the second quarter. That sparked a 3-0 run and 6-2 quarter for the Polar Bears, who extended their lead to 11-6 at the break.
  • The Polar Bears put the game away in the third quarter as Fitzgerald took over, scoring four of Bowdoin's six goals in the stanza to push the lead to double figures.
  • Bowdoin pushed their total to 20 thanks to late goals from Will Van Der Veen and Austin Philie to cap the night.

  • Patrick Fitzgerald's seven goals were one shy of tying the school's single-game record of eight, held by seven different players.
  • In all, a dozen different players tallied for Bowdoin, including Will Byrne and Oliver Bernstein, who had two apiece.
  • Ethan Barnard enjoyed a dominant performance, winning 21 of 28 faceoffs.
  • Defensively, Pat White had two caused turnovers and three ground balls in front of goaltenders Robert Hobbs (seven saves, 51:00) and Jake Phillips (three saves, 9:00).
  • Bowdoin reached the 20-goal plateau for the second time this season and it marked the highest goal total for the Polar Bears against the Mules since a 21-goal performance in 1980.
