CLERMONT, Fla. – The Bowdoin softball team is off to a 1-3 start after a quartet of spring break games in Florida.
The Polar Bears won their season opening game against Smith College by a 6-5 margin. The Polar Bears dropped three straight close games to Franklin and Marshall (4-2), Stockton University (10-8), and Endicott College (2-0).
Smith Game Highlights
- Bowdoin allowed three runs in the top of the second but answered with three in the bottom of the third to tie the game.
- Lilly Armstrong tripled to plate the season's first run and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Angelina Mayers grounded out to shortstop, but drove in Caroline Sablone.
- Smith regained the lead in the fifth with one more run, but Bowdoin again took the lead in the sixth.
- Mayers and Karlye Pallotta each had RBI singles.
- After Smith once again tied the game in the top of the seventh, Katryna Dukehart hit a walkoff RBI single to center.
- Shea Sullivan earned the win in the circle with seven hits allowed and three strikeouts.
- Armstrong and Kyla Gary each had a stolen base.
- Armstrong went 2-for-4 while Sablone went 3-for-4, each with a triple. Sablone was a homerun away from hitting for the cycle.
Franklin and Marshall Game Highlights
- Bowdoin scored two runs in the top of the first, before the Diplomats answered with one in the bottom half of the inning. Mayers had an RBI single to left and Sablone eventually scored on a wild pitch.
- The Diplomats scored three unanswered runs in the bottom of the third to take the 4-2 victory.
- Sablone went 2-for-4 at the plate. Sullivan had a double.
- Anna Halliday allowed four hits and four runs with three strikeouts.
Stockton Game Highlights
- Two innings of scoring output put Stockton out of reach for the Polar Bears. Stockton scored four runs in the second and five runs in the fourth.
- Bowdoin chipped away at the early hole with runs in both the second and third innings.
- Pallotta hit an RBI double and Kasey Cunningham had an RBI groundout.
- Dukehart put up another run in the fifth, plating Sablone with a single to center.
- An error plagued sixth allowed Bowdoin to push three more runs across the plate.
- Bowdoin looked to rally in the seventh but fell just short.
- Kiera Dent suffered the loss, allowing nine hits and eight runs.
- Pallotta was the only Polar Bears with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Endicott Game Highlights
- The Gulls scored single runs in both the third and sixth innings in the shutout win against Bowdoin.
- Bowdoin managed three hits against the Gulls, coming off the bats of Armstrong, Sablone, and JK Bradley.
- Halliday had a strong outing in the circle, sprinkling six hits through six innings of work with three strikeouts.
